pH Associates (an OPEN Health company) is pleased to announce in-house access to THIN (The Health Improvement Network  database) to assist our clients in undertaking observational studies in primary care.

What is THIN data?

THIN is an electronic, nationally representative primary care database that covers approximately 5% of the UK population (England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland). The database contains medical records for around 14.7 million patients from approximately 400 general practices including 1.8 billion consultations, 1.6 billion therapy records and 1.1 billion test results.

THIN is widely used in pharmacoepidemiology studies and wider observational health care research across many disease and therapy areas. Over 500 papers using THIN data have been published in peer-reviewed journals.

Data in THIN is collected during routine clinical care. Anonymised information is available on patient demographics (including socioeconomic status), medical history and other clinical data (e.g. laboratory results and details of referrals to specialist treatment), prescribing information and data on GP consultations. Bespoke patient-level information can also be obtained through the Additional Information Service provided by THIN, e.g. anonymised patient or GP questionnaires.

Strengths of the THIN database

·        Nationally representative, covering approximately 5% of the UK population

·        Data is collected as part of routine clinical practice and therefore reflects ‘real life’

·        New interventions/treatments can be investigated as THIN is continually updated

·        Suitable to study rare diseases

·        Data can be linked to HES (Hospital Episode Statistics) with appropriate approvals

In addition to undertaking research using THIN, the pH Associates team has expertise in conducting observational studies using other large electronic databases across primary and secondary care.

For further information on the THIN database and to discuss how pH Associates can assist you with your research needs, please contact Amanda Pulfer, Joint Managing Director, pH Associates, or 01628 481112.
