Yesterday we held our first ever pH Summit “The REAL WORLD challenge – are we maximising the effectiveness of Real World Evidence?” at the King’s Fund in London. There was a great deal of interest from across the industry and academia and we were at capacity with almost 100 delegates attending.

Kate Peperell, our Founding Director, opened the summit meeting by sharing some thoughts on the recent changes in the environment in which we work, the ever increasing need for RWE and the need to have a clear plan to gather the right data for the right stakeholders at the right time.

The speakers were received well, with Shahid Hanif from the ABPI providing an overview of their current activities and setting the scene with why the UK is such an important place for RWE. Then David O’Reilly, a consultant rheumatologist from the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust and one of our Treat To Target audit clinicians talked about data in the NHS and the difference RWE is making to his practice. Mark Fisher, patent representation from the FH registry which our colleagues Amanda, Helen and Anna work on, talked about his own personal experience and that of his family and stressed the importance of consulting with patients when planning RWE studies.

After a short break, Andrew Lloyd talked about the importance of patient reported data to bodies such as NICE and why RCT data just doesn’t always cut the mustard! He also touched upon the value of qualitative research.  Professor Martin Gibson, Director of Greater Manchester Clinical Research Network then talked about current capabilities with e-health data from his perspective as head of the Greater Manchester Clinical Research Network and Professor Harry Hemingway rounded up the day by talking about the infinite possibilities with data in the future and the initiatives which are ongoing at the Farr Institute.

We had 2 Q&A sessions, chaired by Lesley and then people we also able to chat to the speakers over a glass of wine afterwards.

Overall a very positive experience and one we’d love to repeat next year!

We will be sending out a survey this week to get feedback and ask for suggestions for topics for a similar event next year.
